The Saatva Mattress May Be the Perfect Fit If You

Construction, Material and Layers

The bedding in Saatva is layered to offer maximum of comfort and support, but at the very core, this is innerspring.

Starting from top to bottom, there are 5 different layers:

• The Cover & Euro Pillow Top – Made of organic cotton, the cover is non-removable and hypoallergenic. It’s soft to the touch and offers a pleasant sensation when you lay on the mattress. To create the Euro Pillow Top feel and look, the cover is quilted with a layer of foam (1.25 inches). These two layers are sewn in together to ensure the foam won’t shift or lose shape.
• Lumbar Support Enhancement – This is a layer of eco-friendly memory foam and its main role is to provide back support and pressure relief. With special design, supported by the top layer (quilting is tighter in the lumbar area) you will definitely enjoy the properties this layer brings to the mix!
• Comfort Coils – Designed to respond to everybody shape, this layer of individually wrapped coils is one of the most advanced in the industry. In combination with the two layers on top, this area supports contouring and provides motion isolation.
• Steel Coil Base Support – The next one is another layer of coils, only these are more powerful and provide the bed with good back support and durability. The hourglass design allows for good airflow and gives the bed that innerspring buoyancy you want.
• Dual Perimeter Edge Support System – Most innerspring have good edge support, but Saatva went one step further and added a layer of high-density foam that encases the layers above to prevent sagging around the edges. This also means you can use the entire sleep surface, not just the part on the middle.

Firmness Levels

There are three Saatva versions, which is nice because you get to choose how soft or hard you want the surface to be. You’ll also notice that the thickness varies according to the type of firmness you need. For instance, the version we reviewed is 14.5 inches thick, but there is also a slimmer version (11.5 inches) specially designed to fit adjustable bases.

The layers on top of the individually wrapped coils are softer in this version, so the plush sensation is accentuated. You’ll feel hugged (but not in the viscoelastic fashion) and supported at the same time – almost like sleeping on a cloud.

The Plush Soft provides sleepers with contouring but doesn’t forget about lumbar support and spinal alignment either. So, if you like softer snooze surfaces or you’re a side sleeper, this may be the perfect version for you.

The medium-firm version from this brand is indeed the perfect blend of soft and firm. According to the company, this is the equivalent of the beds you can find in high-end hotels (which says a lot!). This version is perfect for any sleeping position and it’s preferred by couples that don’t have the same sleep behavior.

While reviewing it, we also tested how the layers feel on different weights. Saatva behaved admirably and all the layers participate in creating the perfect surface for any type of weight.

Firm but not hard – This is the outline of the last version of the Saatva offer. With this version, the layers on top are firmer, but still, provide an amazing feeling of comfort and tension release. So, if you’re looking for a mattress that will keep you on top of all the layers, Firm is the level you need. It’s also a great choice for back and stomach sleepers, and for people who have back problems and were recommended a firmer sleeping surface.

Motion Transfer

Due to the individually wrapped coils layer, Saatva is a bed with close-to-perfect motion isolation for a surface with springs. This is the layer that allows contouring, but also the one that pushes back and supports your back. Also, because each coil is individually wrapped, the motion doesn’t go through the entire surface like a wave (as it happens with standard innerspring).

As a result, you can sleep next to a partner that moves a lot in slumber. However, if you are a very light sleeper, you may have some motion-related issues.

How the Edge Support Feels

The layer of foam that encases the other layers does a fantastic job when it comes to durability and support around the edges.

Saatva doesn’t sink too much nor does it lose shape when you sit directly or lay on edge. In translation, you can use the entire surface for sleeping and the product is durable and very well-crafted.
