You Might Really Love the Purple Mattress If

You Might Not Really Love the Purple Bed If

• You want a smooth, memory foam-like type of surface – The secret and unique element in this surface is the grid-like layer that helps with movement isolation and weight distribution. While this layer does a fantastic job, it may feel a bit weird when you first lay on it. However, the feeling goes quickly away.
• You are a tall person – The surface is about an inch smaller than the standards available online, which is why 6’3” people will find their feet hanging out a bit. The mattress is also thinner than the standard (9.5 inches), which can also be a difficulty for tall.
• You want a lightweight product that’s easy to move around – Because all the cool technologies inside, the bed is about 15% heavier than other similar products, which can make it a bit difficult to move if you’re alone. Also, the fact that there are no handles installed on the mattress is not helpful. However, there are handles on the packaging so you can move it around while it’s still rolled.
• You are set on an innerspring – While it provides a unique level of firmness and support, this is not innerspring. But there’s another product called The New Purple that integrates a layer of supportive coils which may feel more like an innerspring. You should check that out!

Construction Design (Materials and Layers)

Because the surface on these mattresses is so unique, we didn’t really know what to expect while reviewing it. First, we noticed it’s thinner than what you usually find online, which can be a bit of an issue if you have problems getting out of bed. Still, this can be easily compensated with a taller frame.

Speaking of frames, Purple is not picky. It can be installed on almost any frame, and you can even order one from the site (they have a standard platform base and an adjustable one).

When you take a look under the viscose, Lycra, and polyester blend cover, you’ll see there are three different layers of foam:

• The top layer – Is the most important one because it gives Purple the unique characteristics that set it apart from the hoi polloi of online products of this type. So, the product starts with 2 inches of Hyper-Elastic Polymer™ grid which allows for air to circulate, it supports and cradles the curves of your body, and is allergen resistant.
• The second layer – Is 3.5 inches of 1.8lbs density polyurethane foam and serves as both a comfort layer and a layer of transition between the top and the base.
• The third layer – Also known as the base, is 4 inches thick and made of 2.0lbs density polyurethane foam. This is designed to be the firm side of the mattress, where the back support happens.

All these layers are covered with a soft and stretchy material that can be removed for spot cleaning. However, it is not machine washable.

Firm-Level Inspected

Because Purple now has two different products, an all-foam surface and a hybrid one with three versions of firmness, we decided to give you all the information on firmness. We only reviewed the all-foam product, but extrapolating from users’ reviews and the company’s information, we were able to understand how the other products feel as well.

Overall, Purple is a soft surface, with regular edge support (for a foam), but it is very responsive and quick. The general feel is unique, and even if you’ve tested or slept on a lot of beds, you will find that the grid offers a totally new sleeping experience.

Regarding firmness, the feel is a medium-firm because the company took a universal firmness approach with this product. Still, the surface provides plenty of contouring, and there is good lumbar support for back sleepers and great pressure relief for side and stomach sleepers.

The grid cradles the heavy areas of the body such as the shoulders, neck, hips, knees, and butt, but also allows for the perfect amount of sinkage to keep the spine aligned.

Still, firmness is a subjective feature, and we found out that weight is important for the general feel. The grid on top may not offer the same support for heavier people so you’ll start to feel the layers underneath it at a certain point. While it’s not necessarily a bad thing, the top layer is the one to provide the most comfort.

When you take a look at the hybrid mattresses, you’ll notice three different options of comfort and the mattress .2 is the firmest. The ‘.2’ comes from the thickness of the Smart Comfort Grid layer, which is 2 inches in this case.

This version is ideal for back sleepers and people who like a bit more firmness in their sleeping surfaces. It comes with the same features as the original Purple but adds a layer of coils that supports dynamic pressure relief and spinal alignment.

Here we have a 3 inches grid layer, and according to Purple, it is the version with the sweet spot between comfy and firm. It can be great for when you’re sharing the bed with a partner that moves a lot in slumber or you can just enjoy the quick responsiveness on your own.

The final version is also the softest because the 4 inches grid layer provides the sleeper with plenty of cushioning and support. So, if you want to feel like sleeping on a cloud, the thick layer on top is a perfect choice.

Cooling Sleep – Does It Get Hot?

Purple was designed by two engineers, and they spent around 20 years in research to find the best materials and create the best experience possible. As a result, the surface doesn’t sleep hot even when it’s hot outside.

This is possible because the grid layer allows the air to move through the entire surface, wicking heat and moisture away from your body. Even more, the cover is thin and breathable, contributing to the general cooling system.

Edge Support Performance

Given that we’re looking at an all-foam product, you won’t be too surprised to learn that edge support is not that great when you’re sitting directly on edge. However, when reviewing it while we laid close to the edge, there is enough support to feel comfortable and the surface doesn’t give that ‘rolling out of bed’ feeling.

In conclusion, Purple is not fantastic for sitting on the edges, but it is great for sleeping on the entire surface.
