Are you looking for a well-established brand, with experience in the industry and a good history to back it up? Then Dunlopillo is a perfect choice!
The company was founded in the 1920s when Mr. E.A. Murphy invented the Dunlopillo latex foam. This led to the creation of the first latex foam mattress, in 1931, and the manufacturer continued improving upon their product ever since.
So, you can imagine why we were curious to review a design that has over 80 years of experience behind! Given they have six different models, we chose one of the most popular, the Millennium, but you can learn about the other five too in our review below.
We also have a summary ready for you here, if you wish to skip the interesting details.
Choose Dunlopillo Mattress If You
- Enjoy a high-quality product – While Dunlopillo is not known for their affordable prices, they are well-known for their high-quality products and attention to details. So, if you want to invest in a product that will keep its features and shape for years, one of the Dunlopillo designs may be the answer!
- Like the idea of an all-latex design – All the designs in this collection are made of natural latex, and they don’t come with any other added elements. The core is a piece of latex, designed to provide the sleeper wit comfort and support.
- Need variable support – The latex surface is separated into seven different zones that provide the perfect support for each part of your body.
- Like choosing the level of firmness – Dunlopillo offers a collection of six sleeping surfaces, each with the same construction, but different levels of firmness. This way, anyone can find a bed that’s right for their needs.
- Want to test the product before purchase – Unlike other manufacturers that prefer selling online Dunlopillo is set on keeping the selling process in brick and mortar stores. This allows you to see and test the surface before paying for it.
- Need a hypoallergenic design – Natural latex and the specially engineered cover have antimicrobial properties, which act as a barrier against bacteria and fungi.
Don’t Pick the Dunlopillo Bed If You
- Want a memory foam surface – Dunlopillo only uses natural latex in its designs so you will not find anything to even resemble the feel of standard memory foam.
- Are set on buying online – The manufacturer doesn’t offer the option to buy online, but you always have the option to visit their stores and enjoy testing the product.
- Want the standard perks brought by an online purchase – Since the bed doesn’t come in a box, you won’t get the usual perks (free delivery or lengthy trial period).
- Have a very low budget – Dunlopillo is not a low-cost brand, but it comes with lots of features that justify the price.
The Layers Structure
The Millennium Dunlopillo design is perfectly simple in structure, with just one layer of natural latex that is also the core of the entire model. This piece of latex is resilient, durable, and features seven zones of comfort so you can rest your shoulders, spine, and hips in perfect alignment.
Because there is only one layer inside, the manufacturer didn’t have to use any glue or other types of harmful chemicals, which creates a completely hypoallergenic surface. It’s also a way to promote a breathable model, with channels engineered in the surface that will wick any moisture or heat away from the sleeper’s body.
Since organic latex is a material that keeps the surface of the mattress flexible, the sleeper will receive progressive support which is of extreme importance for a good night’s sleep. We also have to mention the soft, breathable cover designed with Actipro™ technology in order to eliminate allergens and reduce bacteria inside the mattress. The cover is not removable, but it can be spot cleaned if necessary. We loved the feel and the dual-color design that protects the sides and the bottom of the bed.
One thing we noticed none of the Dunlopillo surfaces features are handles. However, the manufacturer mentions you won’t need them since the mattress doesn’t need to be flipped over or turned to increase its durability.
Firmness Overview (Our Rating)
Dunlopillo is a brand recognized everywhere in the world of mattresses, so we were not surprised to learn they carry a collection of six sleeping surfaces. This way, they can reach different types of sleepers without asking them to compromise on a one-size-fits-all design.
We only reviewed the Millennial model, but we also read reviews from other users in order to bring you all the necessary information for your purchase. So, below you can read about the entire collection of Dunlopillo mattresses.
The surface we reviewed is a medium, with plenty of contouring in the areas where you need it the most (shoulders and hips). Our team enjoyed it, and side sleepers, as well as back sleepers, found it comfortable and extremely well-supporting.
The Orchid has the same structure and cover as the Millennial, but it is firmer, making it a better fit for stomach sleepers and people who take more comfort in a firm design.
Both Orchid and Millennium feature a height of 24 cm, which is important to consider when you decide on the base you will install it on.
This model is thinner than the other two (21 cm), but again, it features the same inner-structure and cover. The only difference is in firmness, as it feels harder and provides less contouring and sinkage. The design is still flexible and very responsive, but not everyone will enjoy it.
So, if you tend to like a firm design, or you tend to sleep on your stomach and your back arches because your pelvis is always buried in the surface underneath, this may be the right choice for you.
With a similar construction, and as tall as Celeste (21 cm), the Royal Sovereign is a bit softer and accommodates side sleepers as well. The design gives in a bit more when you apply pressure, and there is more contouring that encourages anyone with a bad back to try it.
As you can probably tell from the name, this model is the firmest of them all, but it is also the thinnest (18 cm). Specially created to be used on all sorts of frames (including adjustable ones), the Firmrest is recommended for anyone looking for a really firm surface.
Just as thin as Firmrest, but with more contouring and sinkage, this model is also a good fit for adjustable bases, but also works on regular ones. The Diamond comes with ergonomic support and impressive comfort for all types of sleepers.
Overall, each of these six mattresses is part of the same collection, called the Signature Collection, and features a natural latex core, with different levels of support and firmness. It’s also important to note that the manufacturer doesn’t recommend installing them on a solid wood platform or a divan base because the surfaces need good ventilation.
Cooling
Because natural latex has an open cell structure it doesn’t trap heat, so you will not sleep hot on the Dunlopillo Millennium design. The mattress uses your movements during the night to activate the latex’s breathability and keep the airflow at a constant rate.
In conclusion, we can say that all Dunlopillo mattresses have a self-regulating cooling system that is very efficient according to our review results and to reviews from users everywhere.
Edge Support
Unlike other all-foam mattresses, Dunlopillo models are flexible and very accommodating towards your movements. Now, because the core is one big piece of organic latex, edge support is quite impressive and there won’t be any problems related to compression or the rolling out of bed.
Not to mention that the seven zones of comfort are specially designed to keep the edge well-supported.
Other
- Only available in stores – Dunlopillo wants to make sure you make the right choice, so their products are only available in stores. You can check their features online, of course.
- A brand with tradition – This Company has been around since 1929, so they have a large and rich history backing up their products.
- 8-year guarantee – All the beds in the Signature Collection receive an automatic 8-years guarantee, but you have to register it on their site.
- Low-maintenance designs – Because organic latex is highly durable and doesn’t need any maintenance, the bed doesn’t need to be flipped or turned. Once installed, you can use it as is for good.
Overview of Dunlopillo Mattress Review & Rating
Summary
Dunlopillo is a brand with tradition and lots of experience in the latex foam industry, and they feature a rather odd product, if you consider the current designs that favor layers over layers. Still, the superiority of natural latex was proven once more, as their products receive positive reviews from satisfied users every day.
We did our own review, and the results are indeed extremely positive. The latex is a wonderful material, that lets your skin breathe when in slumber, keeps you dry and cozy, and accommodates your every move fast and without lag.
The cover is soft and nice to look at, but you must make sure to follow the manufacturer’s indications when it comes to the bed’s base. If the latex is not well-ventilated, it won’t be able to create a constant airflow, which in time leads to heat buildup.
Otherwise, the product is indeed luxurious, takes care of your health with a hypoallergenic surface, and keeps your body in alignment just right.
