Enjoy Big Fig Mattress If

• You share the bed with a partner – While it is a hybrid, the layer of pocketed coils is specially designed to provide maximum motion isolation. This way, you won’t feel too much movement if your partner is tossing and turning.
• You like a firmer surface – Big Fig is firm, but it also provides good support and flexibility.

You Won’t Enjoy Big Fig Bed If

• You are lightweight – Given the surface is designed for heavyset people, it will feel firm for someone that’s lightweight. So, unless you like a firm surface, this one may not be for you.
• You’re looking for a surface that hugs – Between the firmness of the foams on top and the coils this surface is far from hugging you! So, if this is your heart’s desire, you should consider a different producer.

Bed Construction (Materials/Layers)

The surface features the following inner-structure:

• A Thermogel Quilted Top – This is the layer that keeps you cool at night, but also the one to provide the plushness of the thermogel-treated surface is sewn into the layers and tufted in 16 places, so it can’t be removed, but it is breathable and keeps you comfortable.
• Gel Infused Latex Foam – The layer provides flexibility, but it’s also perforated to allow air to move in and out as needed.
• High-Density Poly Foam – This is actually a layer with three different sheets of the same density, and its main role is to provide no-sag cushioning.
• Individually Wrapped Coils – There are about 1600 coils (with 50% more than most hybrids out there). This is the layer that supports your back, provides a pushback action that keeps your spine aligned, and keeps motion transfer to a minimum.

Finally, the coils are encased in high-density, 80 ILD Edge Foam for extra edge support and reinforcements around the sides.

Given the number of foam layers, we were happy to see the high tuft count, as this keeps everything in place. Shifting materials can make your snooze surface extremely uncomfortable, and tufting prolongs the life of a surface.

Now, since this is a special bed, Big Fig can be delivered with its very own foundation that is designed to support 5 times more than a regular frame beds. Designed with recycled railroad steel, the base supports up to 2000lbs and comes in two versions: low (5 inches high) and tall (9 inches high). Of course, there is an option to get just the mattress, but you should only take it if you already have a sturdy base or you want to install the mattress on the floor.

Firm/Soft

As we already mentioned, Big Fig is a firm surface. However, during our review, we noticed it is just perfect to support a heavyset person because the surface doesn’t sink when you lay on top of it.

The support from the coils is fantastic as it comes exactly as you need it for each part of your body. This way, the neck, shoulders, spine, and hips receive the proper pushback action even though some areas are heavier than others.

After having reviewed several sleeping positions, we believe Big Fig makes a better surface for back sleepers. However, side sleepers may also find it pleasing, but so may lightweight persons who like sleeping on their stomach (because it is firmer than most options available right now).

Edge support is important, especially for heavier people because the pressure on the coils is bigger and it’s easier to feel like you’re rolling out of bed.

To prevent such a feeling, Big Fig added a layer of high-density foam around the layer of coils to reinforce the edge support and make sure the mattress won’t lose shape when you sit on it.
